The Fillmore (Part 2 - Gomez)

Thursday, July 30

I don't think this has ever happened before, and I don't think it will happen again soon: Chip and I went to the Fillmore for the second time in ten days. This time we went to see the British quintet, Gomez.

The last song played in the auditorium before Gomez came onto the stage was someone's cover of the Gomez song, "Whippin' Piccadilly." If anyone knows the name of the band that recorded this (and where I can find the recording), I'd love to know. [UPDATE: It's by Petty Booka, from their album, "Summer Breeze".]

They came onto the stage around 10:15 and finished their last encore almost exactly at midnight. In the hour and forty-four minutes they were on stage, they didn't talk very much between songs. But one of the things they announced was that their second show on July 31 would be an entirely different show. Ian said that they would be repeating only one song, their "smash hit," "Airstream Driver." In other words, it sounds like their label requires them to perform "Airstream Driver" at all their shows.

After the show ended, I noticed that one of the guys cleaning up the stage picked up a set list and handed it to someone standing at the edge of the stage. It turns out that there were (at least) five copies of the set list scattered around the stage, and as they cleaned the stage, they passed these set lists to the people at the edge of the stage. So I joined the small group of people trying to get a copy. And I got one (pictured below -- click on it to enlarge).

[UPDATE 8/1/09: Several people have reached this page by searching for the July 31 setlist. According to the Gomez bulletin board at their website, the list was as follows:

do one

rex

catch

notice

natural

meet me in the city

miles end

gsld

lost

bylbh

ruff

blue moon

ain't no sunshine

win

bone

arrested

operate

But the person who posted it says that they remember hearing Shot Shot instead of Do One.

The Fillmore (Part 1 - Indigo Girls)

Tuesday, July 21

We went to see Indigo Girls at the Fillmore for the first time... well, since the last time we saw them at the Fillmore.

The Girls are off the label and independently producing themselves (again).

I believe I read on Facebook that Emily was a little under the weather for a few days preceding the show, and she did seem a bit low energy.

But Chip said that it was comforting to see them again after several years, like seeing an old friend.

The opening band, Common Rotation, was a very decent band, and theatrical enough to make them interesting to watch. Their special surprise was two-fold -- first, they did a cover of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" (from "Slumdog Millionaire"), and second, John di Maggio (the voice of Bender and others on "Futurama") joined them for this song, doing human beatbox and sound effects. Amy came out to join them for a couple of numbers, and they came out to join the Girls for their encore.

Monty Python News

Via BBC News:

Eric Idle and John Du Prez, who together wrote the music and lyrics for "Spamalot" (the musical based on the film, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"), have written an oratorio based on the film, "Monty Python's Life Of Brian." The title of the oratorio is "Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy)," and it has been performed a number of times in cities around the world since 2007.

The oratorio will be performed as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the premiere of the television show, "Monty Python's Flying Circus." Four of the surviving five cast members are reuniting for one night only to perform the oratorio at the Royal Albert Hall on October 23, 2009. John Cleese has declined to perform, but Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam have all signed onto the project.

In other Python news, a six-episode documentary called, "Monty Python: Almost the Truth (The Lawyer's Cut)" will be broadcast in the US in October, followed by a DVD release soon afterward.

"
'This is a documentary I always hoped that would be made - something so complete and so faithful to the truth that I don't need to watch it,' said [Terry] Jones."
